109 is too many

TOO MANY: Every January, The Portico staff reflects on the number from the previous year and laments… “How many this year?” In 2022, the number was 101. In 2021, 94. And in 2020, 112.

Last year, 109 people died while homeless (21 women, 88 men). The youngest was 19; the oldest 78. And their names shouldn’t be forgotten. They aren’t forgotten by God. Jesus said: Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to me.

Join us on Monday, February 5 at 6 p.m as we say each name out loud at The Homeless Memorial Service. We’ll gather around the Homeless Jesus sculpture to remember that God loved them and knew their name. There will be prayer, music, silence, scripture, and a brief reflection.

1001 GATHERING: Sunday at The 1001 Gathering, we will discuss Jesus’ encounter with a man with an unclean spirit in Mark. Come and See.
